September 20, 2026 — What a wonderful afternoon celebrating 80 years of American Legion Cathay Post #186!

It had been 10 years since our last anniversary celebration — far too long. This gathering brought together current members, past members and their descendants, longtime supporters, and new friends at the Wing Luke Museum. Fittingly, the museum’s namesake, Wing Luke, was also a member of Cathay Post #186.

It was a reunion of old friends and a time to make new ones — sharing memories, stories, and the history of our Post. We heard from past commanders and family members and watched the documentary Legacy of Camaraderie, Community and Patriotism, introduced by producer Tuyen Than.

The celebration opened with a high-energy lion dance by Mak Fai Kung Fu Dragon & Lion Dance Association 麥顯輝龍獅團, setting the tone for a memorable afternoon.

We are grateful to Chrissy Shimizu, Executive Director of the Wing Luke Museum, for her warm welcome and tribute, and to our community partners and supporters: Wing Luke Museum, CID Vision Group, Mak Fai Kung Fu, Tai Tung, and Kau Kau Barbeque Market.

A special thanks to our 80th Anniversary Planning Committee and all our volunteers for making this celebration possible.

We are proud of the legacy of Cathay Post #186 and honored to follow in the footsteps of those who came before us — continuing their tradition of service as Veterans Strengthening America.

September 3, 2026 – Cathay Post #186, with help from the Seattle Mariners, held a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at T-Mobile Park’s POW/MIA Chair of Honor to remember and honor former Prisoners of War and the more than 81,000 U.S. service members who remain missing and unaccounted for.

Every third Friday in September is National POW/MIA Recognition Day—a time to pause, remember, and remind America that the mission is not finished until every service member is accounted for.

Cathay Post #186 invited fellow veterans, currently serving military personnel, friends, and community members to join us in this solemn tribute.

Gold Star family member Rick Holland and Cathay Post member Jerry Lee presented the wreath. David and Roberta Waggoner, local representatives of Project Recover, also participated by presenting a bouquet.

Adding special meaning to the ceremony, participants unfurled the historic Kingdome POW/MIA Flag beside the Chair of Honor. This was the actual POW/MIA flag that once hung from the ceiling of the Kingdome for many years.

Seeing that flag return to the site where the Kingdome once stood was truly a full-circle moment—a powerful reminder that while buildings may disappear, the promise to remember our missing and fallen never does.

We will always honor those who served, those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who remain missing and unaccounted for.

August 29, 2026 — We held a team-building activity on South Lake Union with the Seattle Flying Dragons Boat Club, and what a great event it was!

Our participants shared their enjoyment, excitement, and pride in being part of the experience. Dragon boating challenged us in ways that promoted both mental and physical teamwork—requiring communication, coordination, trust, and a shared commitment to move forward together.

Our group brought together Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard veterans, currently serving members, and ROTC cadets. Despite our different backgrounds and experiences, we came together with a strong sense of community and shared purpose. It was a wonderful opportunity to build relationships, strengthen connections, and learn from one another.

We are grateful to King County’s Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) for supporting opportunities that build healthy relationships, improve connections, and strengthen community support.

A special thanks to the guides at Flying Dragon Boat Club for sharing their expertise, encouragement, and enthusiasm with us.

Everyone had a great time, and we look forward to carrying the teamwork and camaraderie we built on the water into our community.  Together, we paddle forward!

August 14, 2026 — Our August Cathay Post meeting was an evening of fellowship, awesome food, and an inspiring program featuring the Evergreen Boys & Girls State (EBGS) delegates sponsored by Cathay Post #186.

Our special guests included this year’s EBGS delegates and Peer Staff member Derek Su, along with Timothy Lin, John Myers, Matthew Fong, and Carol Reed, who served as EBGS Administrative Officer for 12 years.

The delegates shared their experiences from this year’s program—the first combined Evergreen Boys & Girls State. They spoke highly of the EBGS staff and expressed sincere gratitude for the lessons, friendships, and experiences that will have a lasting impact on their lives.

We are proud to have sponsored these outstanding young leaders and encouraged them to help recruit participants for next year’s Oratorical Contest and Evergreen Boys & Girls State.

District 1 Commander Joel Ware presented Cathay Post #186 with a certificate recognizing our membership retention.

We also received an Appreciation Award from EBGS and Carol Reed for our efforts in recruiting and sponsoring delegates.

✯ ✯ Helping Spokane Fire Victims

We closed the evening with a 5-gallon bucket collection for Spokane fire victims. Thanks to the generosity of our members and guests, we raised an impressive $503.

The donation was presented to District 1 Commander Joel Ware, who will forward the funds through the Department of Washington to assist those affected by the Spokane fires.

Commander Ware commended Cathay Post #186, writing:  “On behalf of District 1, American Legion Department of Washington, I warmly commend both Post 1 and Post 186 for their early and generous contributions to fire relief for the Spokane Area. I commend you for stepping up to help!”
