September 3, 2025 – Cathay Post #186 of The American Legion proudly welcomed National Commander Dan K. Wiley and Department of Washington Commander Al Jensen for a full day of events highlighting military service, community heritage, and the enduring mission of Veterans Strengthening America.
The day began with tours of The Museum of Flight and USCG Sector Puget Sound, followed by an immersive experience in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District. At each stop, members of Cathay Post #186 showcased their proud history and vibrant community.
Highlights included:
• WWII Heroes Honored – At The Museum of Flight, Commander Wiley met two remarkable World War II veterans, both 102 years old: Emil Martin, U.S. Army, and Dick Nelms, a B-17 pilot who flew 35 combat missions.
• Membership Growth – Commander Wiley personally recruited Sector Puget Sound Deputy Commander, Captain Michael J. Hunt, USCG, as a new Legionnaire and member of Cathay Post #186. As a result, he earned his own American Legion National Commander’s “Be the One” membership incentive pin, which is awarded to any Legionnaire who recruits two new members into The American Legion.
• Honoring the Fallen – A solemn tribute was paid at the Chinese-American Soldiers Memorial at Hing Hay Park.
• Historic Legacy – Commander Wiley and Department Commander Jensen learned about Cathay Post #186 and viewed the original charter at the Wing Luke Museum.
• Cultural Celebration – The Mak Fai Kung Fu Dragon & Lion Dance Association 麥顯輝龍獅團 performed at the Chong Wa Benevolent Hall in honor of the distinguished visitors.
“It was an honor to host the National Commander,” said Post Commander Erin McGlenn. “The efforts by post members, friends, family, and community members to make it happen are much appreciated. This was a communal effort. All the feedback from our guests was outstanding. As Cathay Post #186 commander, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our newest member, Captain Mike Hunt, USCG!”
The visit was a powerful reminder of the role Cathay Post #186 plays in honoring veterans, building community, and strengthening America.
