Memorial Day Services

2022

Cathay Post 186 of the American Legion held its annual Memorial Day service to honor the Chinese service members from Seattle who gave their lives during World War II.

The event, at Hing Hay Park on May 30, also featured comments from Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos who spoke of the veterans’ love, loyalty, and legacy.

This Memorial Day marked the first time veterans and their families celebrated the holiday with a Congressional Gold Medal.

2020

On Memorial Day at noon, Cathay Post 186 and community members placed flowers at headstones of fallen veterans, while wearing masks and social distancing. 

2019

Cathay Post 186 hosted its annual Memorial Day Observance May 27 at Hing Hay Park.

The event honored the Asian Americans from Seattle who gave their lives during World War II, and included a performance by the Seattle Chinese Drill Team.

2016

Cathay Post 186 of the American Legion held its annual Memorial Day service to honor the Asian Americans from Seattle who gave their lives during World War II.

The event, in Hing Hay Park on May 30, featured a laying of the wreaths, a gun salute, and a performance by the Chinese Girls’ Drill Team.

2015

The Cathay Post #186 of the American Legion, a Seattle-based veterans organization founded by Chinese American World War II veterans, will hold its annual Memorial Day commemoration in Hing Hay Park on Monday, May 25 at 4:00 p.m.

2014

Seattle’s Cathay Post No. 186 held a Memorial Day event at Hing Hay Park on Monday with an 18-gun “salute to the dead” from Seattle University ROTC members, a flag-raising ceremony, and a performance by the Seattle Chinese Drill Team. Speakers included U.S. Congressman Adam Smith, King County Council member Joe McDermott, and King County Assessor Lloyd Hara. Color Guards from both Cathay Post and the Nisei Veterans Committee participated.

2013

Cathay Post 186 of the American Legion held their annual Memorial Day services in Hing Hay Park on May 27.

The event featured a performance by the Seattle Chinese Girls’ Drill Team, a flag ceremony, and a gun salute.

One of the only chapters in the American Legion founded by Chinese Americans veterans, the Cathay Post was founded in 1945 by David Woo and is a 501c nonprofit organization for veterans.
