May 2023 Update

COMMANDER'S COMMENT

Hello CP 186 members,

Happy Spring!

This is the time of year when we anticipate many things being fresh and new. Similarly, as we look forward to post elections in June, we hope to have fresh and new faces in the CP leadership.

We need everyone's support as we strategize ways to continue the great legacy and mission of our post.  We have accomplished so much in this past year and there is still so much more to do.  I hope you will be a part of the strategic planning and influence on the future of the post.

Please submit your nominations by the next meeting in May.  If you'd like to nominate someone, please contact them personally to discuss with them.   Self nominations are encouraged!

All positions are open. Voting takes place during the June meeting.

During our last meeting, we had a joint session with several members from CACA, a few who are also CP 186 members.  We enjoyed connecting and engaging with them, sharing a delicious potluck meal and hearing our speaker, Fire Chief, Michael Nakamichi share about emergency readiness.  We look forward to partnering with them in preparation for our 2024 Hometown Hero Event at the Museum of Flight

Lastly, congratulations to Emma Lo, who CP 186 sponsored for the American Legion National Oratory Contest in Indianapolis in late April.  She represented the state of WA in and placed 4th out of 49 contestants. We look forward to hearing her give her speech at the June meeting.

For God and Country,

Blessings,

Haydon Mar, Commander

Cathay Post #186

Next General Membership Meeting:

Our next Cathay Post #186 meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the NVC Memorial Hall.

If you have any agenda items for consideration, please contact Post Commander, Haydon Mar a week prior to the meeting.   Hope to see you all at the meeting.

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month:  May 2023

In 1992, Congress established May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to coincide with two key milestones: the arrival of the nation’s first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and Chinese workers’ pivotal role in building the transcontinental railroad (completed May 10, 1869).

The Defense Department pays tribute to the contributions and dedicated service of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, past and present, in defense of the nation during May and throughout the year.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Hing Hay Park

Memorial Day is not just a big 3-day holiday weekend, with big store sales, and BBQs to kick-off the start of summer.  The real meaning of this national holiday is to honor all our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines who died  while serving in U.S. armed forces.

One of our American Legion goals is to HONOR THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US.  Which means The American Legion pays perpetual respect for all past military sacrifices to ensure they are never forgotten by new generations.

If you are able, please considering joining us at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2023 at Seattle's Hing Hay Park to "Honor and Remember" the sacrifices of our U.S. military veterans.  Thank You.

New Cathay Post #186 Website

It has been my pleasure to work on the Cathay Post #186 website! Thank you for providing me this opportunity and your trust to produce a website that not only reflects the outstanding culture of our current post but also recognizes the history and contributions of all Cathay Post #186 members. As I was building this website, I was reminded of the rich history of our post and why it’s important to keep this going. I’m truly honored to be a member of CP#186 and to provide my skill sets to this organization.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or recommendations about our website. I hope this website will be a great public facing resource for all who inquire about our post. In the future, I’d like to recommend a second website for post members only to view meeting minutes and to have a collaborate space to work on future events.

Honor Our Fallen Heroes - Day of Service

Under blooming cherry blossoms, Cathay Post #186 members and other community volunteers paid respects and helped locate 300+ veteran grave sites at Lake View Cemetery.    Efforts to map the resting places of all veterans at Lake View Cemetery was organized by Cathay Post member, Sea Chan, a U.S. Navy Reserve Officer.

Volunteer Opportunity

On Saturday, May 20, 2023, our mayor, local leaders, and residents of Seattle will join together for the  One Seattle Day of Service.

The event is an invitation to every Seattle neighbor to roll up your sleeves, come together, and give back, with volunteer opportunities in each neighborhood across the city.

Last year, members of Cathay Post #186 participated to help clean up our CID home.  We were assigned 2 city blocks and were provided with trash grippers, garbage bags and safety vest.  You even get a free t-shirt.

Come join us for a morning of community service (approx. 3 hours) to help clean our Chinatown-International District home, since 1945.

Please email Adjutant Kent Wong by Friday, May 5, 2023 if you can help out.
